The exhibition Clay! One Hundred Years Ceramics at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie is an exhibition which looks back on one hundred years of ceramic practice at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This ceramic department was the first of its kind in the country, being originally started in Amsterdam by Bert Nienhuis at the Quellijnusschool in 1917. The Quellijnusschool was subsequently fused with two other academies and named the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs (IvKNO) in 1924. This Instituut became known under its current name as the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 1968. This exhibition will present a selection of works from leading artists who have passed through this department and who are representative of the development and practice throughout this hundred year history. The nature of this work has followed the influence and trends which were instigated by those who have led the course during the previous century. Including Bert Nienhuis, Wim de Vries, Theo Dobbelman, Jan van der Vaart and Henk Trumpie. The work 'Earthling Candyman' (2001), on loan from Museum Het Princessehof in Leeuwarden, will be included in the exhibition (information courtesy of Marianne Heslenfeld)
